How’s it going? Hope the coffee is flowing! Today I’m going to talk about another Caffè Umbria coffee that was graciously shared with me by a friend. This is my second of four reviews from this roaster. In my French press today, I have Caffè Umbria’s Bizzarri Blend.
The Roaster
As you may recall from my Arco Etrusco review, Caffè Umbria was founded by an Italian immigrant and third-generation coffee roaster with the intention of creating blends that capture the essence of Italian coffee craftsmanship. The Bizzarri Blend was developed to serve as their all-purpose coffee, delivering a delicious cup no matter how it’s brewed. Let’s find out how it tastes when brewed with a French Press!
When rating coffee I follow the same method of brewing each time. Find out about how I prepare the coffee I rate here.
Caffè Umbria Bizzarri Blend Review:
Aroma and Body
Upon grinding, the Bizzarri Blend had a slightly sweet fragrance with a hint of hazelnut. Brewing the coffee brought out an aroma of sweet molasses with a touch of fruit. The coffee has a medium body with good weight and mouthfeel.
Flavor Profile and Qualities
The cup starts with dark, sugary notes and a strong, but not overpowering, brown sugar sweetness. The sweetness remains through the middle, though it becomes less bold and takes on a slightly burnt sugar quality, giving it molasses-like notes. The finish remains sweet but shifts to a fruity sweetness. There are pear-like notes, as the flavor is sweet but not floral or citrusy like many fruity coffees.
Overall Thoughts
Overall, this was a good cup of coffee with a flavor profile focused on sweetness. It was smooth, with no noticeable bitterness or tartness. The flavor profile was relatively simple, but I think most coffee drinkers would enjoy it because it’s sweet and slightly roasty.
Where to Purchase
You can purchase the Bizzarri Blend directly from the Caffè Umbria website, it’s also available on Amazon. It’s priced the same as the Arco Etrusco—$16 for 12 ounces (about $21 per pound). While still a good cup of coffee, I preferred the Arco Etrusco, and I’d still recommend choosing an organic option at this price point.
