The Roaster
Birchin Lane opened its doors in 2021 and quickly became a favorite among locals and Myrtle Beach tourists, myself included. With a wide range of drink offerings, including one of the best cold brews you’ll ever taste, the shop truly offers something for everyone, even lemonade-based drinks that my toddler loves.
All of their coffee is roasted in-house, and the quality along with their roasting skills can be tasted in every sip. Check out my Birchin Lane Coffee Shop review to learn more about the shop itself. This is my first time reviewing a bag I brought home from the shop, so let’s see if it lives up to the expectations set by their exceptional in-shop offerings.
When rating coffee I follow the same method of brewing each time. Find out about how I brew the French Press coffee I rate here.
Birchin Lane Tall, Dark & Handsome Review
Characteristics and Flavor Profile
Upon grinding, the coffee reveals distinct roasty notes with a hint of smokiness and a very subtle touch of sweetness.
Tall, Dark & Handsome | French Press | Pour Over |
Aroma | Roasty, similar to the fragrance, but with a more noticeable sweetness | Roasty and sweet, prominent notes of molasses |
Body | Full bodied with a substantial weight and mouth feel | Light body with a minimal amount of weight |
Start | Coffee forward with a touch of malty cereal-like sweetness | Sweet and dark sugary, but not overpowering |
Middle | A noticeable increase in sweetness bringing out well balanced molasses notes | Dark sugary notes increase and give the coffee a delicious sweet middle |
Finish | Semi-sweet dark chocolatey finish, notes of cacao balanced with a touch of sweetness | Dark chocolatey finish, the residual sweetness carries through from the middle and provides a well balanced cocoa like finish |
Overall Thoughts
Overall, this is an exceptional coffee. When brewed with a French Press, it delivers a classic dark roast flavor profile, and that’s not a bad thing! It’s a well-executed, exceptionally smooth cup of coffee. I had a hard time choosing a preferred brew method, as the pour-over brought out an enjoyable sweetness throughout the entire experience.
I slightly preferred the French Press, but you really can’t go wrong with either method. The added weight and the subtle transition from malty to molasses-like notes gave the French Press a touch of complexity that I didn’t quite get with the pour-over.
Tall, Dark, & Handsome is a coffee I believe almost any coffee drinker would enjoy, even those who typically gravitate toward lighter or medium roasts.
