How’s it going? Hope the coffee is flowing! Today I am going to be reviewing the second Sacred Cups offering from Purity Coffee. In my French Press today I have the Sacred Cups Aponte Inga Dark Roast.
This week’s coffee is similar to last weeks, as they are both the Aponte Inga Colombian roast from Purity Coffee, so the backstory and information will be similar. The reviews of the coffee themselves will be unique, so stick with it until the end and consider it a good refresher on why this coffee is so unique! So, what is the difference between the two? Well, it is the length of time they are roasted. When discussing coffee roasts there are three main types, light, medium, and dark roast, with light roast having the shortest roasting time and dark roast having the longest. The roasting type changes the flavor notes that are highlighted in the roast. Light roasts tend to highlight the fruity and floral flavors of coffee, as they are the least roasted, allowing the coffee to maintain more of the properties associated with the coffee fruit. Medium roasts typically have more sweetness, balancing the properties of the coffee fruit with a deeper roasty flavor. Dark roast coffee usually contains a bolder and smoky flavor that tends to have more bitterness than sweetness, like a dark chocolate. As you recall from last week, the Sacred Cups Aponte Inga coffees are honey-processed, this helps the Aponte Inga Dark Roast to stand out when compared to other dark roasts, as you will find out in my review of the coffee below.
As I mentioned in my Purity Flow review and in my review last week, all coffee sold by Purity is third-party tested and certified mold and mycotoxin free. It is also tested it ensure it has high antioxidant content as well, making Purity some of the healthiest and cleanest coffee out there! So, with all of these similarities to Purity, what exactly is Sacred Cups coffee? I am glad you, or I, asked!
Sacred Cups Coffee:
Sacred Cups was started by Purity’s co-founder and is meant to change the way a coffee drinker views their coffee, shifting it from a daily drink habit into a mindful experience leading to reflection and connection. This is achieved by providing exceptional and rare single-origin coffee that (spoiler alert) is too good to just pour in a cup and drink. It is a cup of coffee that you will truly appreciate each sip every single time you have it. Sacred Cups is an attempt to take Purity’s delicious and health focused coffee to the next level by incorporating mental health aspects into the physical health benefits of Purity’s coffee.
I was lucky enough to get my hands on the Sacred Cups Bundle, which is now sold out, but do not fear, both the medium and dark roast are available individually. This review will focus on the dark roast, as the medium roast was posted last week. This coffee is sourced from the Aponte Inga indigenous people of Colombia, their story is what makes this such a rare and special coffee. I will never in one blog post be capable of explaining just how unique and awesome the Aponte Inga people are, but this article does an amazing job telling their story. As Purity explains on their website the Aponte Inga use ancient regenerative farming techniques to grow coffee in a way that cultivates an incredible fruit while preserving and respecting their ancient lands. One thing you will notice when reading about, and purchasing (which you totally should do!) the Sacred Cups coffees is that they are not marked as organic, but this is because the tribe does not have the means to certify their product. Rest assured, their techniques satisfy all of the standards of an organic coffee, as Purity has evaluated their standards. Heck, I trust Purity more than the USDA anyway!
The Aponte Inga region is known for its fertile soil that is high in nutrients due to the volcanic ash content. These nutrients already lead to a better coffee, however, Sacred Cups takes this a step further using honey-processing. Honey-processing does not mean literally using honey to process coffee, but instead means that the coffee is processed by first washing the coffee in a traditional way, which removes the skin and pulp, but the sweet and sticky substance (called mucilage) that surrounds the fruit is left on for the drying process. This leads to a sweeter (hence the name honey-processing) and fuller bodied coffee. Is your mouth watering yet? Mine is. If you read my Sacred Cups Aponte Inga Medium Roast Coffee Review you will know I loved it. Let’s find out if the dark roast can meet the lofty expectations established by the medium roast!
Sacred Cups Coffee Aponte Inga Dark Roast Coffee Review:
The fragrance of the Sacred Cups Aponte Inga Dark Roast is exceptional, with a roasty, dark chocolate aroma and a slight cinnamon-like sweet and spiciness.
Once brewed these notes shifted slightly, as the aroma was more creamy with a warm vanilla sweetness. This is a bold and full bodied coffee with a good weight to it.
The experience of the cup starts with deep and roasty dark chocolatey notes that are well balanced by a touch of sweetness. This sweetness remains in the middle, but the flavor notes shift and become slightly nutty, bringing out notes of hazelnut. The coffee finishes with a pop of blueberry-like fruity notes that have a dark sugary sweetness balanced by a slight tartness.
Overall this was another down right delicious coffee from Purity. The honey processing helps it to stand out from other dark roasts by adding a consistent sweetness and slightly fruity finish to a coffee that already has a delicious dark roast profile of dark chocolate and hazelnuts. This is a truly unique dark roast that absolutely has to be tasted to appreciate how good it is. This is a coffee that is great for any coffee drinker as it is smooth and easy to drink while the fruity finish adds a subtle complexity that I think even a regular coffee drinker would appreciate.
If you want to try this, or any of Purity’s other health focused and delicious coffees check out the Purity website. At $32 for a 12oz bag the Sacred Cups coffees are on the expensive side, but you can use the code COASTERSNCOFFEE20 to get 20% off of your first order. These coffees are well worth the price due to the limited availability and unique experience provided by drinking the coffee.
