How’s it going? Hope the coffee is flowing! I had an amazing time at the Pennsylvania Chocolate and Coffee festival (read about my experience here) and today I am excited to bring you my first review for one of the vendors I met while I was there. After having some fun with canned coffees I have dusted off the French press and it’s time to get back to the grind, of whole bean coffee that is! In my French Press today I have B-Cups Coffee’s Island Roast.
B-Cups Coffee is an amazing company that was started in honor of the co-founder’s aunt, who unfortunately passed away after a long fight with breast cancer. You can read their story here. This experience led to the founding of B-Cups Coffee and their decisions to donate 5% of all sales to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Speaking with the team at the festival and a few interactions afterwards, I can see just how passionate they are about their mission. Their mission really hits home with me, as my mom battled breast cancer. I was excited to get a bag of their coffee and help continue to spread the word about this awesome group of people. In addition to their great mission, they also make some excellent coffee!
When rating coffee I follow the same method of brewing each time. Find out about how I brew the coffee I rate here.
B-Cups Island Roast Review:
Upon opening the bag of Island Roast you are treated with the scent of the vanilla, it is a great smell that is not overpowering or intrusive. The coffee itself has a lighter body, but packs some very bold flavors.
B-Cups Island Roast begins with slight notes of rum liqueur giving it a hint of coconut flavor. The tasting notes shift in the middle to sweet vanilla with a slight roastiness from the caramel. Finally, the coffee finishes with caramel notes coming front and center giving it a rich but not overpowering sweetness.
Overall, Island Roast is the perfect name for this. The tasting notes of vanilla, caramel, and coconut give the coffee a nice summery island vibe. I could see myself drinking this on a cruise ship or beach. I generally tend to avoid flavored coffees, as I feel the flavors overpower the coffee and take away from the experience. Most flavored coffees also have a terrible artificial aftertaste. B-Cups Island Roast allowed some of the flavors of the coffee to shine through, it did have a slight aftertaste, though it was not as overpowering and unpleasant as most flavored coffees. This would be a great blend for people who are looking for a sweeter, flavored coffee. For those who do not like flavored coffee this would certainly not appeal to you. Luckily, B-Cups has plenty of non-flavored offerings as well!
If you are looking for a good cup of coffee that supports a great cause check out B-Cups full lineup of coffee. I was able to sample their Pink Ribbon Blend at the coffee festival and really enjoyed that as well. Unfortunately, I was unable to get enough notes to write a report, but one day I will get my hands on a bag! You can get B-Cups Coffee from their website and at select retail stores as they continue to expand this offering.
