How’s it going? Hope the coffee is flowing! Today I am going to be talking a roaster with a background and mission that hits home with me, literally! This week I am brewing Caffeinated Educators Nicaragua La Bastilla.
The Roaster
Caffeinated Educators is a relatively new roaster, started just a few months ago by husband-and-wife duo Jesús and Kelly Brown. Jesús, a special education teacher, and Kelly, a middle school science teacher, began roasting coffee as a side project.
What started as a side project quickly grew into a mission: giving back to educators and creating an outlet for them through their bi-weekly podcast, while also providing them with an outstanding coffee to drink of course! As the husband of an educator, I really connect with this mission and was excited for the chance to try their coffee.
When rating coffee I follow the same method of brewing each time. Find out about how I brew the French Press coffee I rate here.
Caffeinated Educators Nicaragua Review
Characteristics and Flavor Profile:
From the moment this package landed in my mailbox, I couldn’t wait to brew it. There’s just something about being greeted by the rich aroma of coffee that makes even the simple task of checking the mail feel exciting.
Let me just say, this coffee did not disappoint, as grinding it brought out terrific bright and fruity notes with just a subtle touch of sweetness.
| Caffeinated Educators Nicaragua | French Press | Pour Over |
| Aroma | Sweet with very pronounced dark sugary notes | Rich and sweet caramel notes |
| Body | Medium bodied with pleasant weight and mouthfeel | Medium-light body, subtle but noticeable weight which was a nice change in a pour over |
| Start | Coffee forward with a bold and roasty start | A bright pop of sweet citrus, well balanced sweetness and fruity tartness |
| Middle | Bright and sustained citrusy middle, well balanced sweetness with a fruity acidity | Fruity notes remain but a slight roastiness becomes noticeable |
| Finish | Dark sugary sweetness with a subtle hint of citrus remaining | Roastiness starts to take focus, bringing a great caramel-like sweetness while a touch of citrus remains |
Overall Thoughts
Overall, this is an outstanding coffee, whether brewed in a French press or a pour-over. It’s smooth, delicious, and delivers a complex, beautifully-balanced flavor profile. While its complexity might be a little much for the casual coffee drinker, it’s such a well crafted cup that I think it can still appeal to just about anyone. Coffee enthusiasts in particular will absolutely appreciate this one.
I slightly preferred this in my Chemex, as I love a fruity coffee. I specifically chose this Nicaragua for the fruity flavor profile and it did not disappoint. While these notes were noticeable in the French Press, making this in a pour over really helps them shine. That being said, I loved this coffee with both brew methods, so you can’t go wrong.
Where to Purchase
You can, and honestly totally should, purchase this fantastic coffee on the Caffeinated Educators website. They also offer a Colombian that I will definitely be buying in the near future. All of their coffee is organic and fair trade which makes the price point of $16 per 12oz (about $21.33 per pound) a fair value.
I personally cannot wait to see what the future holds for this awesome new roaster, I certainly think it will be bright!
