How’s it going? Hope the coffee is flowing! As the summer presses on, so do we with our canned cold brews. To be honest, these have been a lot of fun to review so I will likely continue to mix them in even after the summer ends. I still prefer the tried and true consistency of my French Press, but for today in my glass I have a can of High Brew Black Nitro Cold Brew.

High Brew is a brand that exclusively offers prepackaged coffee in cans or plastic bottles. What differentiates them from other brands is they tend to have a slight spin on each type of beverage they make. For example, they have a self heating canned coffee that you twist the bottom of and the coffee gets hot. That particular coffee was my introduction to High Brew and I will pick one up soon to do a full review on.

For today we will focus in on their nitro cold brew. What makes this can different from other brands is what High Brew calls a “widget” in the can. The widget is a small mechanism that release nitrogen when the can is shaken slightly. This gives the cold brew a fresh dose of nitro at the time it is consumed. Most canned nitro cold brews have the nitro added into the can, but the widget means the nitrogen will be freshly activated at the time of consumption. In theory this should create a more similar effect as nitro cold brew you get from a tap. Will this be the case? Let’s find out!

High Brew Black Nitro Cold Brew review:

This cup of coffee had a medium body, which is noteworthy for a prepackaged cold brew. As you can see in the photo above there is a decent nitro head, not the same as you’d get from a tap, but for a can of cold brew it is pretty good. The widget worked surprisingly well, providing that nice nitro head, but more importantly providing a touch of creaminess to the coffee. While not quite tap quality, this was one of the better nitro cold brews I’ve had from a can. It is possible with a more vigorous pour I could have increased the effect of the nitro, but as is I was very happy with it.

The front to this coffee had subtle notes of vanilla, which I enjoyed. There was a slight sweetness with a touch of roastiness. The roastiness grew stronger in the middle, while still allowing the subtle sweetness to show through. Finally, the coffee finishes with that sweetness coming front and center, giving nice notes of chocolate.

Overall, I found this to be a really good cup of coffee. Not just for a canned cold brew. Canned nitro cold brew is never the same quality as from a tap, but High Brew’s widget technology really helped to give it more of that nitro feel. The nitro creaminess is paired with great flavors that, while slightly complex are well balanced and make each sip enjoyable.

High Brew has a wide range of packaged coffee, and this won’t be the last you read of them on here. You are likely to see some of their offerings in your nearest grocery store or convenience store.
