How’s it going? Hope the coffee is flowing! We are still in the midst of the summer heat, so today I will be sticking with another cold brew review. In my glass today I have La Colombe’s Strawberry Mocha Cold Brew.
The Roaster
La Colombe was founded in Philadelphia in 1994 by business partners JP Iberti and Todd Carmichael. They chose Philadelphia in part because the city had relatively little competition in the coffee scene at the time, back when Starbucks hadn’t yet flooded every corner with its signature brand of mediocre coffee. The pair wanted to bring high-quality and ethically-sourced coffee to the east coast. In doing so, they played a key role in establishing Philadelphia’s modern coffee culture, paving the way for a boom in craft roasters and independent coffee shops across the city.
I’ve previously reviewed two other canned coffees from La Colombe, their seasonal Peppermint Mocha Draft Latte and their Unsweetened Canned Cold Brew. I found each offering to be disappointing, with the Unsweetened Cold Brew being the better of the two. So let’s find out if the Strawberry Mocha outshines these other coffees.
La Colmbe Strawberry Mocha Cold Brew Review:
Aroma and Body
La Colombe’s Strawberry Mocha Cold Brew has a pleasant aroma, with subtle strawberry notes and just a hint of roasty coffee coming through. For a canned cold brew, this coffee has a surprising body. The froth from the milk added a great mouth feel and a medium body.
Flavor Profile and Qualities
The coffee starts with a strong strawberry front, it is sweet and fruity without much tartness, like a strawberry syrup. A hint of chocolate comes through in the middle, but the strawberry remains the dominant flavor and overshadows it. The finish brings a slightly bitter, roasty edge, introducing the first prominent coffee flavor and helping to balance the earlier sweetness. Most notably, especially for a canned flavored coffee, there’s no unpleasant or chemically aftertaste.
Overall Thoughts
I was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed this coffee. Based on my past experiences with La Colombe’s canned offerings, my expectations were pretty low, but the Strawberry Mocha far exceeded them. It delivered a flavorful profile that I didn’t anticipate liking as much as I did. It was sweet, but not overpowering, and both the chocolate and coffee had moments to show through while the strawberry remained prominent throughout.
Where to Purchase
You can purchase La Colombe’s Strawberry Mocha Cold Brew directly at the La Colombe website or on Amazon. It is slightly cheaper on Amazon at $29.09 for 12 (about $2.43 per can) compared to $34 for 12 (about $2.83 per can) with the added benefit of free shipping through Prime.
