How’s it going? Hope the coffee is flowing! Today I am going to be talking about another coffee from one of my favorite roasters. This week I am brewing One Village’s Nordico Blend.
The Roaster
Based in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, One Village Coffee is a roaster dedicated to making a positive impact on coffee farmers, roasters, and drinkers. They achieve this by ensuring fair value for the farms they source from and by donating 1% of their sales to coffee-related environmental charities. They also happen to be one of my favorite coffee roasters.
As you know by now, I love me some One Village Coffee, with Villager being one of my all time favorite coffees. So, let’s find out how Nordico stacks up against the rest of their phenomenal lineup!
When rating coffee I follow the same method of brewing each time. Find out about how I brew the coffee I rate here.
One Village Nordico Coffee Review:
Characteristics and Flavor Profile
When ground, Nordico gives off a fantastic rich hazelnut fragrance with a subtle touch of cocoa notes.
One Village Nordico | French Press | Pour Over |
Aroma | Sweet chocolatey notes with a touch of subtle fruit | Sweet and fruity with pronounced berry notes |
Body | Medium body with a good weight and mouth feel | Light body with no noticeable mouthfeel |
Start | Strong and pronounced hazelnut notes | Roasty and nutty, but relatively subtle |
Middle | Hazelnut gets strong, however a slightly off putting bitterness also arises | A refreshing pop of sweet berry |
Finish | The nuttiness fades slightly and allows some slightly sweeter chocolate to show through from the aroma | Roasty with a slightly cocoa-like finish that still allows the berry notes to stand out |
Overall Thoughts
Overall, I was initially disappointed with this coffee as my first taste was with my French Press. It was still a decent cup of coffee, but the sharp bitterness in the middle significantly detracted from the experience. The flavor profile was also not overly complex. However, brewing it in the Chemex completely redeemed it for me.
I much preferred this coffee brewed in my Chemex, and I feel like pour over is the way to go with Nordico. While the flavor notes remained subtle, it had the complexity that I have come to expect from One Village and was a smooth cup of coffee.
Where to Purchase
You can purchase Nordico from the One Village website. Priced at $17.50 for a 12 oz bag (about $23.33 per pound) it is a fair price for a premium, freshly roasted coffee. However, it is not one of One Village’s organic options. I would recommend Villager, Legend, and Artist over Nordico. I would also recommend the Foundations Series coffees over it as well.
