How’s it going? Hope the coffee is flowing! Every so often when I’m grocery shopping i will see something in the coffee aisle that piques my interest. This week I noticed two of Slingshot Coffee’s coffee sodas that made me think, “what in the world is that?” and also , “I need to try that!”. The fact that they were on clearance and half off also helped. This week I will be reviewing their Black Cherry Cola Coffee Soda. Please note, as of May 2025 the coffee sodas are no longer available on the Slingshot Coffee website.
Slingshot Coffee was founded in 2012 by a barista who was looking to start a coffee company providing organic coffee along with seemingly desiring to push the boundaries of coffee. With their coffee sodas, Slingshot is certainly a creative company that is not afraid of experimentation. They say fortune favors the bold, but let’s see if it also makes great coffee!
Slingshot Coffee Black Cherry Cola Coffee Soda review:
As expected, the nose of this had very strong notes of cherry. There was a slight hint of coffee as well. The drink was very light bodied, it drank more like a soda than a coffee. The Black Cherry Cola coffee starts off well with strong cherry notes balanced by a touch of roasty coffee, giving it an almost dark chocolate covered cherry taste. Unfortunately in the middle the taste starts to get unpleasant. The tartness of the cherry becomes quite strong and an unpleasant cola flavor starts to take over. The cherry fades completely in the finish and the cola and coffee stand out here, but not in a good way. I do not think these flavors complement each other well with this drink and there is an overpowering tartness that clashes with the other notes.
Overall, I did not enjoy this drink at all. I don’t like being negative, especially because I like creative companies that get adventurous and push boundaries but this was pretty difficult to drink. There aren’t many drinks I have a hard time finishing, but this was one of them.
