Third Horse Coffee Guatemalan Roast Review

Simple and descriptive, a solid approach to coffee bags.

How’s it going? Hope the coffee is flowing! Today I am going to be reviewing another one of the coffees I tried at the Philadelphia Chocolate and Coffee Festival (read my review of the event here). I’ve still got a lot of great content coming from the vendors I’ve met and sampled there, but today’s review is about a coffee I enjoyed so much I needed to bring a bag home with me! In my French Press this week I have Third Horse Coffee’s Guatemalan coffee.

Third Horse Coffee is run by a truly wonderful family. They are currently in the process of raising funds to start a coffee shop that will employe individuals with developmental disabilities. You can read about their mission here, but the condensed version is they adopted a child who has developmental delays and when trying to help them find work they realized how little opportunity there was. They decided to take action and start a coffee company to create these opportunities themselves for their son and others who have developmental delays. What an amazing cause! I also love a good Guatemalan, so it was a no brainer for me to buy a bag at the festival and support this endeavor.

When rating coffee I follow the same method of brewing each time. Find out about how I brew the coffee I rate here.

Third Horse Coffee Guatemalan Review:

Third Horse Coffee’s Guatemalan has a nice dark sugary nose, think maple syrup-like sweetness. Despite being made in my French Press it had a much lighter body than I expected. This body did not impact the flavors at all though, as the coffee had a rich sweet front, the maple notes from the nose stayed into the first sip. The middle is sweet as well, but the sweetness shifts to a fruity and slightly tangy sweetness, similar to a raisin. Now, if you’re a raisin hater do not fear, as the coffee itself does not taste like a raisin! This fruitiness stays in the finish, but gradually gives way to sweet honey notes. The finish is very bold and the sweetness is terrific, honestly I was very surprised based on the light body.

Overall, this was a delicious and very smooth cup of coffee. The light body gave me some concerns at first, but it packed a bold flavor profile that did not disappoint. This is a sweeter coffee, but the variety of sweetness and slightly tangy middle help to keep it fresh from start to finish. This would be a good coffee for a coffee lover looking for a sweet but not overpowering cup of coffee to enjoy.
