How’s it going? Hope the coffee is flowing! Today, I’m back with another decaf coffee review bringing you a brew that may be lacking in caffeine but certainly not in flavor. This week, I am brewing Third Horse Coffee’s House Decaf.
The Roaster
Based in Brookhaven, Pennsylvania, Third Horse Coffee was founded in 2023 by Mark and Beth Kessler with the mission of helping individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. You can read about their story and mission here, but the short version is they adopted a child with developmental delays and when trying to help him find work they realized how little opportunity there was. They decided to take action and start a coffee company to create these opportunities themselves for their son and others who have developmental delays.
I was really excited to see them back at the Pennsylvania Chocolate and Coffee Festival this year. First, because I was looking forward to hearing how their goal of launching a cafe was going, and second, because their Guatemalan is fantastic and I could not wait to get more of their coffee. So, let’s find out if this decaf could match the Guatemalan in terms of flavor.
When rating coffee I follow the same method of brewing each time. Find out about how I prepare French Press coffee here.

Overall Thoughts
Overall, this was an exceptional coffee. It was delicious, with bold flavors that help it stand out compared to most decafs. The flavors were strong but well balanced, making for a very enjoyable cup. While there is some complexity, especially when brewed in a French Press, this coffee’s brown spice and sweetness along with it’s coffee-forward start would make this appeal to most coffee drinkers.
I had a hard time choosing, but slightly preferred this when brewed in the pour-over. While the French Press had a nice complexity, including the floral notes in the middle, I loved the way my Chemex made the spicy notes pop.
