Wegmans Organic Bold Dark Roast Review – freshly brewed cup of coffee next to a bag of Wegmans Organic Bold Dark Roast whole bean coffee.
Simple packaging, but a bold coffee!

Wegmans Organic Bold Dark Roast Review

How’s it going? Hope the coffee is flowing! In this Wegmans Organic Bold Dark Roast Review, I’m taking a closer look at one of the most affordable organic coffees you’ll find on grocery store shelves. This bold dark roast is actually cheaper than many non-organic coffees at Wegmans. That raises an obvious question, is this simply a budget organic coffee, or is it actually worth brewing? I put it to the test using my usual French Press method to evaluate its aroma, body, flavor, and overall drinkability.

The Roaster

Unlike many of the coffees I review, Wegmans Organic Bold Dark Roast is a private label grocery store coffee rather than a specialty roaster product. Wegmans is a regional grocery chain known for producing many of its own store-brand foods, including coffee.

This coffee always grabs my attention when I am in store, due to the very low price, especially for an organic coffee. Let’s find out if this coffee is a great value or cheap low quality brew!

When rating coffee I follow the same method of brewing each time. Find out about how I brew the coffee I rate here.

Wegmans Organic Bold Dark Roast Review:

Characteristics and Flavor Profile

Grinding the coffee produced a deep roasted aroma with slightly smoky notes and hints of dark chocolate.

Overall Thoughts

Overall, this is a decent cup of coffee with a fairly basic flavor profile. The tasting notes don’t stand out much outside of the strong roasty notes and a dark chocolatey bitterness throughout. My French press brought out a touch of spicy whereas my pour-over helped provide a more balanced sweetness for the bitterness. This coffee does certainly live up to the boldness claim in its name, as it is a strong and full bodied brew.

  • French Press: A bold, roasty cup with dark chocolate bitterness and a slightly savory finish.
  • Pour-over: Smooth with bold roasty notes and dark chocolate bitterness balanced by a slight sweetness.
  • Preferred brew method: Pour-over

This coffee is not for those who like a sweeter roast, as the flavor profile is primarily roasty and caca-like, with only a hint of sweetness in the pour-over cup. It would make a great base for mixed coffee or espresso drinks though as it is coffee forward without overly strong flavors that could conflict with ingredients in such drinks.

Where to Purchase

Unlike my usual reviews, unsurprisingly you can only get this coffee at Wegmans. At a price point of $8.49 for 12 oz (about $11.32 per pound) this is a great value for an organic coffee. It’s available on the Wegman’s website or in their grocery stores. It’s also available pre-ground and as K-Cups.

Conclusion – Wegmans Organic Bold Dark Roast

Wegmans Organic Bold Dark Roast delivers exactly what its name promises, a bold dark roast with a full body and noticeable bitterness. The flavor profile doesn’t offer much complexity, but it is still a decent cup of coffee especially for the price.

If you are looking for a budget-friendly organic coffee with traditional dark roast flavors, this one may be worth trying.
