How’s it going? Hope the coffee is flowing! While the next few weeks, or actually months, will be focusing on all the exciting new coffees I picked up at the Pennsylvania Chocolate and Coffee Festival (review coming soon). I will still be mixing in a few others including some canned cold brews. This week’s review is just that! In my glass this week I have Wegman’s Canned Vanilla Cold Brew.
The Brand
Wegmans is a relatively large regional grocery store chain, with stores primarily in the Northeastern United States. They offer a mix of their own store-brand products and name brands. My wife and I really enjoy the Wegmans brand products and find that they often exceed their name-brand competition.
Unsurprisingly, like most other large grocery chains, they do not roast their own coffee and instead rely on a variety larger roasters to supply their coffee and beans. From my experience, such as with their Organic Bold Dark Roast, the Wegmans branded coffee tends to be decent, slightly better than brands like Dunkin’ Donuts or Starbucks, but still unspectacular and certainly not on par with a high-quality specialty coffee roaster. Let’s find out how their canned coffees compare!
Wegmans Vanilla Cold Brew Latte Review:
Characteristics and Flavor Profile
| Wegmans Vanilla Cold Brew Latte | Canned Coffee |
| Aroma | Strong vanilla notes, sweet with some roasty coffee notes showing through |
| Body | Light body, but with a good frothiness that adds to the mouthfeel |
| Start | Bold sweet vanilla notes, no noticeable coffee taste |
| Middle | Sweetness remains, but coffee notes start to show through giving the cup some balance |
| Finish | Sweet finish, with a slight chemically aftertaste, not as terrible as many other canned coffees though |
Overall Thoughts
Wegmans Vanilla Cold Brew Latte is a decent offering for a canned coffee. The sweetness and vanilla are the most prominent flavors; however the middle does have a decent balance with a pop of coffee showing through. A slightly chemical aftertaste detracts from the experience some, but it’s not as overwhelming or unpleasant as many other canned coffees, especially those using erythritol for a sweetener.
I really enjoyed the frothiness and felt it gave this light-bodied coffee a good mouthfeel. That said, I do wish the ingredients were cleaner, as there are multiple gums and other additives in the coffee. With the taste and body, I would love to see if Wegmans could make an affordable organic alternative, maybe with less additives as well.
I do think this makes an affordable alternative for people looking to save time and money by cutting out their morning Starbucks or Dunkin run, as the sweetness is quite similar to drinks from those shops. However, if you’re currently getting your lattes from a local roaster you are most likely getting a far superior product than this canned drink.
Where to Purchase
As is expected with a Wegmans branded product, this drink is available in Wegmans stores or on the Wegmans website. At a price point of $2.49 for an 11 ounce can or $8.99 for a 4 pack of 9 ounce cans, it is a reasonably priced product.
