Backyard Beans Punch in the Face Review
How’s it going? Hope the coffee is flowing! In this Backyard Beans Punch in the Face Review I’m taking a look at a coffee that hits a little closer to home than most I cover. Backyard Beans is a Pennsylvania-based roaster, and Punch in the Face is their flagship blend. It is one of their most well-known coffees in the specialty coffee space.
This review breaks down exactly what you can expect from a cup of Punch in the Face from aroma to finish. I tested it in both a French press and a pour-over to see which brew method brings out the best cup, along with whether it lives up to its bold name. If you are looking for an every day dark roast from a roaster with a bit of personality, stick around to see if this one’s worth adding to your rotation.
The Roaster
Backyard Beans was started in 2013 in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, quite literally in a backyard. Its founders, Laura and Matthew Adams, initially began roasting as a hobby using a popcorn popper. Over time they noticed that their local farmer’s market did not have any fresh, locally roasted coffee. This experience led the couple on a mission to share their love for coffee with the area and surrounding markets.
Using a Weber grill the couple increased their production capabilities to 5 pound batches and initially sold to neighbors and friends. They focused primarily on light and mediums roasts, as they were concerned that using a grill may lead to too smoky of a dark roast.
However, as their coffee gained popularity customers started to request a dark roast. In response, they developed their first dark roast blend, Punch in the Face, which would go on to become one of their signature coffees.
As their flagship blend, and with a name like Punch in the Face, it felt like the perfect place to start my Backyard Beans reviews. It also didn’t hurt that this was the clear winner of my recent poll on which blend I should try first. Let’s pour a cup and find out why this has been one of their best sellers for over a decade.
When rating coffee I follow the same method of brewing each time. Learn how I prepare French Press coffee here.

Characteristics and Flavor Profile
Grinding Punch in the Face brought forward a slightly caramel-like sweetness, reminiscent of cooked brown sugar.
| Punch in the Face | French Press | Pour-Over |
| Aroma | Brown sugar, bold, roasty and sweet | Molasses-like, dark and slightly sweet, but not sugary |
| Body | Full body, this is a heavy coffee with a great mouthfeel | Medium-full, a lot of weight for a filtered coffee and one of the heavier pour-overs I’ve had |
| Start | Rich dark chocolate notes, cacao focused with a touch of spice and sweetness | Dark chocolate focused with smooth cacao notes and a hint of sweetness |
| Middle | Balanced chocolate, notes of cacao and sweetness with smoky undertones | Rich semi-sweet dark chocolate, more balanced than in the front with a touch of fruity sweetness |
| Finish | Smooth and smoky with subtle lingering chocolate | Coffee-forward, smooth and roasty |
Overall Thoughts
Overall, this is an excellent dark roast that focuses on quality of roast over complexity. Rather than chasing a wide range of flavors, it delivers rich dark chocolate, deep roasty notes, and a smooth smoky finish with impressive consistency. It’s a bold coffee, but one that’s very smooth and easy to drink.
- French Press: Full-bodied with rich dark chocolate, subtle spice, and a smooth smoky finish. Bold, but smooth.
- Pour-over: Smooth with a touch of complexity, the middle has a subtle fruity sweetness before finishing roasty.
- Preferred brew method: Pour-over.
I slightly preferred the pour-over because it introduced just enough subtle fruit character to add another layer of complexity while still preserving everything that makes this a great dark roast. The French press, however, is exactly what many dark roast lovers are looking for, bold, chocolate-forward, and incredibly satisfying.
If you enjoy classic dark roasts with rich chocolate and roasted flavors, this coffee is an easy recommendation. If you’re looking for an even more traditional dark roast profile, check out my review of Terra Lava Costa Rican Dark Roast, which delivers many of the classic characteristics dark roast lovers expect.
For those who prefer a more complex cup, Sacred Cups Aponte Inga Dark Roast builds on a similar chocolatey foundation with bright blueberry-like notes that add another layer of depth. And if you’re in the mood for something completely different, Cleona Coffee Roasters Nomads offers a dessert-like s’mores-inspired profile that’s both unique and memorable.
