Terra Lava Costa Rican Dark Roast Coffee Review
How’s it going? Hope the coffee is flowing! Today I’m bringing you a detailed Terra Lava Costa Rican Dark Roast Coffee Review. This new coffee brand offers sustainably grown and lab-tested coffee that focuses on clean sourcing, regenerative farming, and bold flavor. From its origins in Costa Rica to third-party testing for mold and mycotoxins, Terra Lava positions itself as both health-conscious and quality-driven. You know I love clean and healthy coffees, but as always the real question is: how does it taste?
The Roaster
Terra Lava started in 2020 when three coffee lovers with a passion for the Earth and sustainability planted about two and a half acres of coffee trees on their property in Costa Rica. Utilizing regenerative farming techniques and partnering with local single mothers for harvesting, while paying fair wages, of course, Terra Lava not only cares for the land where they grow their beans, but also helps provide for local families.
The company partnered with MK Supplements, a family-owned and sustainability-focused business. Together, they created a small-batch, health-focused coffee brand for their lineup. Terra Lava was a perfect fit, as all of their coffee is third-party lab tested to ensure it is free of mold, mycotoxins, and pesticides.
As you know, I love organic and third-party-tested coffee here at Coasters & Coffee, so you can see why I’m excited to share this brand with you all! While I love clean coffee, I also love great tasting coffee! So let’s find out if Terra Lava checks that box too.
When rating coffee I follow the same method of brewing each time. Find out about how I prepare French Press coffee here.

Overall Thoughts
Overall, this was a great coffee with a flavor profile that is pretty traditional for a Costa Rican. Each brew method produced a smooth and delicious cup.
- French Press: Bold and flavorful, featuring rich dark chocolate notes with a touch of caramel, followed by a smooth hazelnut-like finish.
- Pour-over: Subtle flavors with a smooth, well-balanced profile. Sweet nuttiness paired with a hint of woodiness adds enjoyable complexity.
- Preferred: French Press
Each brew method produced a smooth and delicious coffee. However, I found the Chemex to be slightly more reserved in flavor. The French Press really let the coffee shine. Its rich chocolate notes made it my preferred brewing method for this coffee.
This coffee will appeal to most drinkers. It has enough complexity for enthusiasts while still remaining approachable and coffee-forward for casual drinkers. The added health benefits are a bonus that make it a well-rounded crowd-pleaser.
Where to Purchase
