Backyard Beans Breakfast Blend Review

How’s it going? Hope the coffee is flowing! In this Backyard Beans Breakfast Blend Review, I’m taking a look at another coffee from one of Pennsylvania’s most recognizable roasters. After recently reviewing Backyard Beans’ Punch in the Face dark roast, I was excited to try one of their medium roast offerings and check out another side of this roaster.

In this review, I’ll break down exactly what you can expect from Backyard Beans Breakfast Blend, from aroma to finish. I tested it using both a French press and a pour-over to see which brew method brings out the best flavors and whether this blend deserves a spot in your daily rotation.

The Roaster

Backyard Beans was founded in 2013 in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, by Laura and Matthew Adams. The couple first began roasting coffee as a hobby using a popcorn popper. As they developed their roasting skills, they noticed their local farmers market lacked fresh, locally roasted coffee. That realization inspired them to turn their passion into a business.

After upgrading to a Weber grill capable of roasting 5-pound batches, they began selling coffee to neighbors, friends, and the surrounding community. They focused on light and medium roasts to avoid smoky flavors often found in darker roasts.

After last week’s review of Punch in the Face, Backyard Beans’ most recognizable coffee, I wanted to explore another side of the roaster with Breakfast Blend. As one of their longtime staple blends, it showcases the medium roasts that helped establish Backyard Beans while still delivering the flavor and quality coffee enthusiasts look for.

Let’s pour a cup and see what makes this blend a favorite among Backyard Beans fans.

Overall Thoughts

Overall, Breakfast Blend is a smooth and enjoyable medium roast with a delicious combination of sweet and tart fruity notes, chocolate, and caramel. I really enjoyed how the apple notes remained present throughout the cup. They took center stage at the beginning before settling into the background as the caramel and chocolate flavors became more prominent.

  • French press: Smooth and easy to drink with a great flavor profile. The apple-like fruity start that carried through to the finish added complexity to the cup but let the caramel and chocolate notes shine.
  • Pour-over: While the flavor profile was enjoyable, this brew method did not deliver the same smoothness as the French press. The cup was pleasant overall, but had a slight bitterness.
  • Preferred brew method: French press

The French press allowed Breakfast Blend to showcase what makes it a great everyday coffee. The caramel sweetness and chocolate notes create a familiar foundation that casual coffee drinkers will enjoy. The lingering apple notes add the complexity that coffee enthusiasts look for.

Where to Purchase

Breakfast Blend is available on Amazon for $15.29 for 12oz (about $20.38 per pound), or directly through the Backyard Beans website where it is $17.50 for 12oz (about $23.33 per pound). Both options are fairly priced for a high-quality organic coffee, with Amazon offering the better value while purchasing direct guarantees a fresher roast.

Conclusion – Backyard Beans Breakfast Blend Review

After really enjoying my experience with Punch in the Face, I had high expectations for Breakfast Blend, and it certainly lived up to them. It is a great example of what makes a well-crafted everyday coffee so enjoyable. It delivers a smooth and balanced cup with sweet caramel, chocolate, and terrific apple-like fruity notes. Whether you’re new to specialty coffee or simply looking for a dependable daily cup, Backyard Beans Breakfast Blend is an easy recommendation.

If you enjoy a fruitier coffee, check out my review of Grounds & Hounds Soul Pup, which offers a medium-dark roast profile that drinks closer to a medium roast with bright fruity notes. For those looking for a more complex cup with additional layers of flavor, Sacred Cups Aponte Inga Medium Roast delivers a similar balance of sweetness and fruit with even more complexity. And if you prefer a bolder dark roast experience, check out my review of Backyard Beans Punch in the Face, which showcases the rich chocolate and smoky flavors of their signature dark roast.
