Braham Brewing Morning Roast Ethiopian Coffee Review

How’s it going? Hope the coffee is flowing! In this Braham Brewing Morning Roast Ethiopian Coffee Review, I’m taking a look at a coffee from a Minnesota roaster that was generously sent to me by a reader and supporter of Coasters & Coffee. This is the first coffee a reader has ever sent me to review. That makes it a special milestone for the blog.

Ethiopian coffees are some of my favorites. I love their bright fruit flavors, sweetness, and complexity. The day this coffee arrived, the fragrance coming through the bag alone had me excited to check it out. In this review, I’ll break down everything you can expect from this coffee, from fragrance to finish. I brewed it using both a French press and a pour-over to find out which method brings out the best flavors in this coffee.

The Roaster

Braham Brewing Company began roasting small-batch organic coffee in 2018 when Mary Lodin and Jay Mankie started their journey from a warehouse space in Minnesota. What began as a passion for coffee quickly grew into something much larger than a traditional coffee roaster. They envisioned creating a place where people could gather, slow down, and enjoy fresh coffee, homemade food, and meaningful experiences in a welcoming atmosphere.

Mary’s Swedish heritage inspired the welcoming atmosphere at Braham Brewing. That focus shows in their small-batch organic coffee, scratch-made food, and commitment to quality.

Braham Brewing takes a unique approach to roasting. Their coffees are available in three roast levels: Morning Roast, City Roast, and French Roast. Morning Roast is their light roast option designed to highlight the coffee’s natural characteristics, City Roast offers a balanced medium roast profile, and French Roast delivers the bold flavors expected from a darker roast.

Learning about Mary’s passion for coffee made me even more excited to try this roast. The glowing recommendation from the reader who sent it only added to that excitement.

When rating coffee I follow the same method of brewing each time. Learn how I prepare French Press coffee here

Overall Thoughts

Overall, Braham Brewing Morning Roast Ethiopian reminds me why I love Ethiopian coffee. It delivers a fantastic balance between bright fruit flavors and rich chocolate sweetness without becoming overly acidic.

The French press created an incredible cup that evolved from start to finish. It opens with bright fruity notes before giving way to sweet milk chocolate. The creamy vanilla finish added another great tasting layer of sweetness.

The pour-over produced a very good cup as well, but it showcased a different side of the coffee. The fruit notes became more subtle, while hazelnut and chocolate flavors took center stage. The floral, tea-like finish highlighted provided a great complexity.

  • French press: Smooth, balanced, and incredibly enjoyable. The combination of berry, milk chocolate, and vanilla created a layered cup with excellent flavors from start to finish.
  • Pour-over: A lighter and more delicate cup of coffee. The hazelnut and chocolate flavors were enjoyable, while the floral finish added complexity.
  • Preferred brew method: French press

The French press brought out everything I love about Ethiopian coffees. The fruit-forward start, rich chocolate middle, and sweet finish created a cup I looked forward to brewing again.

Where to Purchase

Braham Brewing Morning Roast Ethiopian is currently available directly through Braham Brewing Company. With their approach of offering many coffees in multiple roast levels, coffee drinkers can explore different expressions of the same beans depending on their preferred flavor profile.

If you are ever in the Braham, Minnesota area, which is located about an hour and a half from Minneapolis, I highly recommend stopping by, enjoying the experience, and stocking up on their coffee. After trying Morning Roast Ethiopian, I know I’ll be looking forward to visiting myself!

For those who cannot visit in person, Braham Brewing does offer shipping on select coffees, including their Honduran and Nicaraguan Blend. Due to being a small-batch roaster, their shipping options are currently limited, but their coffee remains a great value at $17 per pound for a high-quality organic coffee.

This Morning Roast Ethiopian was a fantastic introduction to a roaster I may not have discovered otherwise. Bright berry notes, smooth milk chocolate, and a sweet vanilla finish made this one of my favorite Ethiopian coffees. While both brew methods produced an excellent cup, the French press was the clear winner.
