The Roastery Ethiopian Yrgacheffee Review

My bag of Ethiopian YrgaCheffee

How’s it going? Hope the coffee is flowing! Today we are going to be talking about some coffee I brought home during a recent trip to Minnesota. When I was out there I was lucky enough to stumble into a wonderful place called The Roastery (read more about them here). Though tempted by the Kenya AA, a personal favorite of mine, I decided to try a coffee I haven’t had before called Yrgacheffe. A coffee sourced from the Yirgacheffe region located in southern Ethiopia.

The Roastery’s Yrgacheffe is naturally processed, as opposed to the more common washed process. This means instead of soaking in water for about a day, the beans are laid out to dry under the sun. This leads to a less acidic brew and can bring out fruity notes in some brews.

When rating coffee I follow the same method of brewing each time. Find out about how I brew the coffee I rate here.

The Roastery’s Natural Organic YrgaCheffee review:

I found this coffee to be quite smooth, with a medium body. There is a slight variance in the coffee depending on where the beans are sourced from, but I found The Roastery’s YrgaCheffee to be slightly more roasty than expected. From start to finish the coffee was remarkably smooth with minimal tannins. The benefits of the natural processing was on full display with this coffee, creating a low acidity.

The variance of Yirgacheffee coffee goes beyond the name, you’ll see it called Yirgacheffee, Yrgacheffee, and even sometimes Yergacheffee. The variance also extends to the flavor profile. Some variants are known to be sweeter, The Roastery’s was not sweet to me and instead seemed more on the roasty side. I found it to have a nice, but subtle, roasty middle with slight chocolatey undertones.

Again, from start to finish this was one of the smoothest cups of coffee I have had. The Roastery’s Yrgacheffee featured a terrifically smooth finish with a slightly nutty back end. I also got some nice toasty cereal notes, think toasted rice cereal, that had me wanting to brew another cup immediately after finishing.

Overall, I found the Natural Organic Ethiopia Yrgacheffee from The Roastery to be a great cup of coffee. While I had hoped for more of the advertised fruity notes, specifically the strawberry and blueberry notes, the flavors I did get more than made up for it. The coffee is well balanced and smooth from start to finish. I think it would appeal to just about any coffee drinker out there, especially being as smooth as it was. The subtlety of the chocolate notes would appeal to the no frills coffee drinker (like my dad). While the toasty finish would have the coffee fanatic in your life asking you for more.

If you like what you read and want to try this terrific roast for your self head over to The Roastery and grab a bag. Check out their other beans while you’re at it. I know I look forward to trying more of their offerings in the near future.
