How’s it going? Hope the coffee is flowing! This week I am going to be talking about a coffee that I have been drinking over the past few years that I really enjoy. In my French Press this week I have Savannah Bee Company’s Roasted Honey Coffee.
I first had Savannah Bee Company’s Roasted Honey Coffee about 5 years ago during a trip to Myrtle Beach. I also learned a valuable lesson that day too! After sampling the coffee in their Barefoot Landing location I decided to buy a bag, when I got to the register the 12oz bag rang up at $2. I immediately grabbed another bag, leaving about 5 on the shelf still. The next day I told my wife I needed to go back right away and get the rest of the coffee because of the price. Unfortunately, when I returned the register error was corrected and it was ringing up at the normal price of $18 a bag again. The lesson here? If a bag of coffee is $2 you buy every single bag they have!
The coffee itself is roasted at the Charleston Coffee Exchange and then when it arrives at Savanna Bee Company it is lightly coated in honey. For those of you who are concerned about your grinders, the honey on the beans is barely noticeable and has not caused any issues with my Baratza Encore. It does make the beans delicious to eat though, which is a nice bonus. Is the coffee as delicious as the beans? Let’s find out!
When rating coffee I follow the same method of brewing each time. Find out about how I prepare the coffee I rate here.
Savannah Bee Company Roasted Honey Coffee review:
This is one of my favorite coffees to make as it gives a great fragrance and aroma of honey when you make it. For reference, when talking about the smell of coffee, fragrance is the smell when the coffee is ground whereas aroma is the smell when the coffee is brewed. The honey is not overpowering, but it is strong enough to get you excited for your cup of coffee. The coffee has a medium body, with a good amount of weight to it.
The cup starts with toasty and slightly nutty notes that have just a touch of sweetness from the honey. The sweetness increases in the middle the honey notes start to take prominence. The honey flavor continues to grow stronger in the finish, with a hint of smokiness that gives it a good balance.
Overall I enjoy drinking this coffee just as much as I enjoy making it. It is a really smooth and easy to drink coffee that starts off with coffee forward flavors before giving way to the honey in the middle and finish. The honey is not overpowering and it adds a great sweetness throughout the entire cup. I think this is a great coffee for just about any coffee drinker. While not overly complex the scent and taste is fantastic. Coffee fans will enjoy making and drinking this. Casual drinkers will also enjoy it for the smoothness and sweetness in the flavor profile.
You can find Roasted Honey Coffee on the Savannah Bee Company website along with all of their delicious honey. While it is on the expensive side at $18 for 12oz (or about $24 per pound) it is on the higher end of pricing, especially for a non-organic coffee. However it is certainly worth trying as it is delicious.
