How’s it going? Hope the coffee is flowing! Today I am going to be talking about a coffee that I picked up on a whim, mainly because I am inundated with Starbucks gift cards. In my French Press today I have Starbucks Organic Yukon Blend.
I am not a Starbucks fan, but due to an abundance of gift cards I have been stopping into their stores a little more frequently than usual. During my last trip to grab some coffee with a friend I noticed the Organic Yukon Blend and I will admit the marketing on the bag got me. It is marketed as a hearty roast for camping and outdoor activities with bold herbs and spiciness, it immediately piqued my interest as a potentially interesting blend to try. Could this be my new go to blend on the rare case I am buying a bag of coffee from Starbucks? Let’s find out!
When rating coffee I follow the same method of brewing each time. Find out about how I prepare the coffee I rate here.
Starbucks Organic Yukon Blend coffee review:
Yukon Blend starts out with a fairly unique fragrance, giving creamy notes with a touch of spice as it grinds. When the coffee takes on a sweet and spicy clove-like aroma. It does not have much weight or mouthfeel with a medium-light body.
The coffee starts with a very muted flavor, just a touch of sweetness but nothing very noticeable. Thankfully, as it transitions to the middle the spicy notes start to grow. The clove from the aroma returns and gives a great spiciness with a touch of sweetness. The middle was the highlight of the cup for me. The spicy notes build to a strong crescendo in the finish before abruptly dropping, giving the coffee a disappointing ending that hardly left me wanting more.
Overall this was an ok cup of coffee. I enjoyed the flavor profile, but found for a coffee that claims to be bold and hearty, they were not as noticeable as I hoped. As I mentioned the middle was the highlight and gave some great spicy clove notes, but the way these notes dropped off in the finish was a let down. In my opinion the finish of a coffee is important as it is the lasting impression the coffee gives that makes you want to come back for more. This was still one of the better Starbucks blends that I have tried, as it was relatively smooth and did not have the typical bitterness Starbucks coffee tends to have. At a price point of $14.95 a pound it is an ok value in a pinch, especially for an organic coffee. However, you can get cleaner and better coffee from local or smaller roasters for about that same price.
You can find Starbucks Organic Yukon Blend on the Starbucks website and Amazon (it is very expensive here). It is also available in some of their coffee shops.
