How’s it going? Hope the coffee is flowing! Today I’m bringing you a review of Birchin Lane Coffee Company, a fantastic coffee shop in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Birchin Lane is located at 9620 N Kings Highway in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. This hidden gem is located in a shopping center called the Galleria, which can be seen and accessed from the highway, meaning even if you are just passing by you can easily stop in! The shop itself is tucked away in a small section of the shopping center that does not face the road so a GPS might make it easier to find.
The shop itself gives off some serious beach vibes, with friendly and vibrant colors and a laid back staff that is kind, courteous, and always very helpful anytime you stop by. Check out my reel on Instagram to get a look at the shop for yourself. If you are lucky you may even catch the owner Kim, who loves to share her passion for coffee with her customers. Birchin Lane also roasts all of their coffee at this location, which makes each drink and bag of coffee you buy from them very fresh.
I have had quite a few drinks, including the shaken espresso, mocha, and Carmel macchiato, however it has been a few years since I had them. I was also lucky enough to get to sample their Single Origin Reserve Uganda blend, but I had a sinus infection at the time and did not feel I should formally review it due to my compromised pallet. However, every drink and coffee blend I have had has been delicious. Today I will focus on the 2 drinks I set out to review during my trip.
Birchin Lane offers a wide variety of drinks, their menu is extensive and they also have rotating speciality drinks. My personal favorite and go to every time is their cold brew. The regular old brew and nitro cold brew are both delicious, for the first part of this review I will discuss the nitro cold brew but from a flavor profile perspective they are the same, so just subtract the creaminess and you will know what to expect from the regular cold brew.
Cold Brew:
The cold brew has a nice medium body and the nitro adds the perfect amount of creaminess. It is a very smooth and easy drinking cold brew. The front gives dark chocolatey notes, almost like a bakers chocolate with a slight sweetness brought out by the cold brew process. The coffee maintains this sweetness but the chocolatey notes give way to a terrific roastiness. The cold brew has a big chocolatey finish with a great balance of sweetness and coffee flavor. The roastiness remains through the finish as well and neither the chocolate or roastiness overpowers the other.
Overall, Birchlin Lane’s cold brew is one of the best cold brews I’ve ever had. This was my first time trying the nitro, and it took an already incredible coffee to the next level. The cold brew is bold and coffee forward without being overpowering. It is also very refreshing, on a hot day it is an unbeatable choice. Any coffee drinker would enjoy this, especially those who prefer an iced coffee over a hot.
Beach Beans:
The coffee of the day during my visit was the Beach Beans blend, described as a medium-dark roast and 1 of Birchin Lane’s 3 signature blends. The cup of Beach Beans I had presented with a light-medium body, it was smooth but a little reserved. The front had slight citrus notes and a bit of tartness, though none of the flavors in the flavor profile stood out. The citrus notes came on a little stronger and the tartness gave way to an orange-like sweetness. The citrus notes fade in the finish and the tasting notes shift to a sweeter toasted-cereal ending.
After having the cold brew I had high expectations that the cup of Beach Beans ultimately did not meet. The coffee was smooth and did not have any acidity, but none of the flavors in the profile were bold or stood out. Given that this is a beach coffee shop I actually think this blend makes a lot of sense as on a hot day it is refreshing and light, making it easy to drink. While I prefer a bolder coffee, such as the cold brew, I think the Beach Beans would still have mass appeal.
Birchlin Lane is an absolute must visit when you are in the area, whether you prefer espresso drinks, mixed coffee drinks, iced, or hot coffee Birchin Lane will have something you will love. Their beans are also available for purchase online and you can bet you will keep seeing reviews of their coffee at least each year.
