How’s it going? Hope the coffee is flowing! It’s been a hot and humid summer here in Pennsylvania so far, so I decided to put the French press away for today’s review and grab a can of cold brew instead. In my glass today is High Brew Coffee’s Caramel Nitro Cold Brew.
The Roaster
Founded in 2013 by Texas entrepreneur David Smith, High Brew got its start like many other companies, with its founder wanting to go sailing more! All joking aside, David and his wife were looking for a more portable, boat-friendly coffee solution, so they started brewing their own cold brew and the rest was history.
After selling his successful iced tea company, David launched High Brew with the mission of providing a high-quality, go-anywhere, and delicious way for people to get their caffeine fix.
You may recall that last year I got my hands on their Black Nitro Cold Brew, and really enjoyed it! So, let’s see if the Caramel Nitro Cold Brew lives up to my high expectations.
High Brew Coffee Caramel Nitro Cold Brew Coffee Review:
Aroma and Body
This coffee didn’t have a noticeable aroma, just a very faint caramel-like sweetness. It had a much lighter body than High Brew’s Black Cold Brew, with a mouthfeel that was more milky than coffee-like. The nitrogen in the can created a great nitro head and added a subtle creaminess to the cup.
Flavor Profile and Qualities
The coffee, unsurprisingly, starts off with strong and sweet caramel notes. This sweetness carries through the middle, but becomes more balanced as a noticeable creamy flavor begins to build from the milk along with a touch of roasty burnt sugar. The cup finishes with bold, sweet caramel notes that stand out, with just enough creaminess to keep the caramel from becoming overpowering.
Unfortunately, there is a slight chemical aftertaste, possibly from the natural flavors or other additives like pectin and phosphates. That said, this chemical taste isn’t as pronounced as in some of the other canned and flavored drinks I’ve reviewed.
Overall Thoughts
Overall, this was a decent canned cold brew. While it didn’t have any noticeable coffee flavor, the burnt sugariness of the caramel added a hint of roastiness. I enjoyed the subtle creaminess in the middle before it returned to caramel on the finish. It was also too sweet for my liking.
I would have preferred a version that let more of the coffee shine through. Especially knowing how delicious High Brew’s cold brew is, but this drink is tailored more toward fans of sweet, flavored coffee rather than black coffee lovers. And in that regard, it definitely hits the mark. If you regularly buy caramel lattes from your local coffee shop, this could be a great alternative.
Where to Purchase
You can purchase High Brew’s Caramel Nitro Cold Brew, along with the rest of their offerings, directly from the High Brew Website. It’s also available on Amazon. Either way it is $36 for a case of 12 ($3 per can) with the advantage of saving about $10 on shipping if you are an Amazon Prime member.
