Bulletproof Coffee The Original Review
How’s it going? Hope the coffee is flowing! In this Bulletproof Coffee The Original Review, we take a closer look at this popular coffee. It’s one of the most talked-about brands in the industry. Bulletproof is known for its roots in biohacking. It also promotes mold-free, high-performance coffee. These claims have earned it a loyal following. But how does The Original actually taste, and does it hold up against today’s specialty coffee standards? In this review, we break down everything you need to know. This includes flavor, smoothness, value, and overall quality. You’ll know exactly what to expect in each cup.
The Roaster
Bulletproof was founded in 2013 by Dave Asprey, a technology executive who later became a prominent figure in the biohacking space. The idea for the brand stemmed from a trip to Tibet, where Asprey tried traditional yak butter tea and claimed it provided a sustained energy boost beyond what he typically experienced from coffee.
After returning home, he began experimenting to recreate that effect. He eventually developed Bulletproof Coffee. It is a blend of coffee, grass-fed butter, and MCT oil. The recipe went viral online. It became especially popular in keto and wellness communities. It also helped launch the Bulletproof brand.
From the start, Bulletproof positioned itself around the concept of clean coffee. Asprey has been outspoken about concerns surrounding mycotoxins in coffee, leading the company to emphasize sourcing higher-quality beans and implementing testing protocols as part of its process.
As the company expanded, it evolved beyond coffee into a broader wellness and lifestyle brand. Traditional specialty roasters focus on small-batch roasting and origin-driven profiles. Bulletproof takes a more scaled approach. It prioritizes consistency, sourcing standards, and product design. The result is a lineup of coffees that are smooth, approachable, and easy to drink. However, they are often less complex than coffees from smaller specialty roasters.
While some of the brand’s broader health claims have sparked debate, this is a coffee blog, so I will focus on the overall quality of The Original.
When rating coffee, I follow the same method of brewing each time. Learn how I prepare French Press coffee here.
Bulletproof Coffee The Original Review:
Characteristics and Flavor Profile
Grinding The Original produced a light, fruity fragrance with a touch of citrus-like tartness.
| The Original | French Press | Pour-Over |
| Aroma | Sweet and slightly fruity | Fruity with a touch of chocolate |
| Body | Medium-full, noticeable weight and mouthfeel | Medium-light, slight weight |
| Start | Prune-like start, sweet and fruity with a subtle mustiness | Rich sweet fruity notes |
| Middle | Sweet fruity notes with a touch of cocoa | Slightly tart citrus fruit-like notes with a touch of sweetness |
| Finish | Sweet chocolatey finish with a good balance of cocoa and sweetness | Sweet chocolatey finish with subtle fruity undertones |
Overall Thoughts
Overall, this was a smooth and enjoyable cup of coffee. Brewing The Original in my French Press provided a good balance of sweet fruit and chocolate. The Pour-over produced a slightly more complex cup with more noticeable fruity notes before a great chocolatey finish.
- French Press: Smooth and sweet. The flavor notes are more subtle, except for a bold chocolate finish.
- Pour-over: Bright fruity notes from start to finish. It moves smoothly from sweet fruit to tart fruit, ending with a chocolatey finish.
- Preferred brew method: Pour-over
Bulletproof Coffee’s The Original is a solid cup of coffee. The French Press produced a cup that would appeal to most casual coffee drinkers as it was sweeter and the fruity notes were more of a support to the chocolate. My pour-over had decent complexity. It won’t wow enthusiasts, but it is still a good cup of coffee. Most coffee drinkers would enjoy it. I slightly preferred the pour-over. It brought out the fruity notes more.
Where to Purchase
You can find Bulletproof Coffee’s The Original on Amazon at a price point of $15.99 for a 12 oz bag (about $21.32 per pound). The Bulletproof website lists it at $18.99 (about $25.32 per pound). Each price point is solid for a third-party tested coffee. However, it is not organic. Coffees like Purity Ease (full review here) or Terra Lava’s Costa Rican Dark Roast (full review here) are organic. I enjoyed both of those coffees more than this one.
Conclusion – Bulletproof Coffee The Original Review
I was looking forward to trying this coffee. I enjoy testing new lab-tested brands, and I had heard a lot about Bulletproof. The flavor profile is not anything special. However, it is a decent value for a lab-tested coffee. It is also very easy to drink.
