One of my new favorite coffees: Birchin Lane’s Single Origin Ethiopian

Birchin Lane Single Origin Ethiopian Coffee Review

How’s it going? Hope the coffee is flowing! In this Birchin Lane Single Origin Ethiopian Coffee Review, I’m taking a look at a unique coffee from one of my favorite coffee shops. After previously reviewing several of Birchin Lane’s signature blends, including Tall, Dark, & Handsome and Beach Beans, I was excited to see this single-origin Ethiopian on the shelf during my most recent visit.

As you may recall from last week’s Braham Brewing Morning Roast Ethiopian review, Ethiopian coffees are one of my favorite origins because they are known for their incredible fruit-forward flavors and complex tasting profiles.

This review breaks down exactly what makes this coffee so special, from fragrance to finish. I brewed it using both a French press and a pour-over to see which method brought out the best flavors and whether this coffee deserves a spot in your coffee rotation.

The Roaster

Birchin Lane opened its doors in 2021 and quickly became a favorite among locals and Myrtle Beach visitors. With a wide range of drink offerings, including one of the best cold brews you’ll find anywhere, Birchin Lane has built a reputation for quality coffee and exceptional drinks. All of their coffee is roasted in-house at their Myrtle Beach location. If you want to learn more about the shop itself, check out my Birchin Lane Coffee Company review.

Today, we’re moving beyond their signature blends and exploring one of their single-origin offerings. Let’s find out how this Ethiopian coffee compares to the other Birchin Lane coffees I’ve reviewed.

When rating coffee I follow the same method of brewing each time. Learn how I prepare French Press coffee here

Overall Thoughts

Overall, this Ethiopian single-origin from Birchin Lane is a remarkable coffee. The combination of bold pineapple, chocolate, and a touch of tartness creates a cup that is unique, flavorful, and easy to drink.

  • French Press: A smooth and incredibly enjoyable cup that highlights the bold pineapple notes before transitioning into a sweeter fruit profile with a balanced tart and sweet finish.
  • Pour-over: A more complex experience where bright pineapple flavors combine with subtle dark chocolate and cacao notes before finishing with rich fruit flavors and a touch of tart lime.
  • Preferred brew method: Pour-over

The French press highlights the bright fruity characteristics exceptionally well. The pineapple immediately stands out before transitioning into a sweeter and more traditional fruity profile. The finish maintains a pleasant balance between tartness and sweetness, creating a cup I kept wanting more of.

The pour-over takes the complexity to another level. While the pineapple remains the star of the show, the middle brings forward subtle dark chocolate and cacao notes. The finish brings the pineapple forward with a slight lime-like tartness.

I ever so slightly preferred the pour-over, the complexity of the pineapple, dark chocolate, and touch of lime made it stand out. However, you cannot go wrong with either brew method.

Where to Purchase

This Single Origin Ethiopian is not currently available on their website, as their single-origin offerings rotate throughout the year. However, you can check out their current lineup of freshly roasted coffees directly through Birchin Lane, including their signature blends and other single-origin coffees.

If you are ever in Myrtle Beach, Birchin Lane is absolutely worth a visit. Whether you enjoy espresso drinks, cold brew, iced coffee, or traditional brewed coffee, their menu has something for everyone. Their nitro cold brew remains one of my favorite coffee shop drinks I have ever tried.
