How’s it going? Hope the coffee is flowing! As we have reached the middle of summer it seems appropriate to keep the cold brew reviews going. We will go back to the French Press next week, but for today in my glass I have a can of La Colombe’s Unsweetened Black Cold Brew.
While making my way through the coffee aisle this week I was hoping to score another deal. Unfortunately nothing was on clearance, but this can of La Colombe caught my eye. I’ve had their canned cold brew before, but the updated label drew me back in.
This particular line of La Colombe cold brew contains chicory root. Their larger containers of cold brew do not include the chicory root. I would prefer this as I am not a huge fan of chicory root, though when done right it can add a nice flavor profile to a coffee. Will this be the case? Let’s find out!
La Colombe’s Unsweetened Black Cold Brew review:
This can of cold brew presents a medium-light body. One benefit to chicory in coffee is that it adds body, so for a cold brew this can be a great addition. This was not a nitro cold brew, but it had a slight creaminess to it like a nitro. It made a great first impression on my initial sip. In my experience most canned coffees are very light bodied, so this was a good differentiator.
The front to this coffee was a little on the bitter side, which may be from the chicory. This bitterness settled into a balanced middle with a slight sweetness. There was also a mild nuttiness to the middle that added a nice touch of flavor. The flavor continued to shift as the bitterness faded to a light and mildly sweet finish with slight roasted hazelnut notes.
Overall, I found this to be a decent cup of coffee, their claim of it being a rich coffee is certainly true. The body was a really nice change for a canned cold brew. What I enjoy the most about cold brew is the smoothness and natural sweetness cold brewing brings out. This can had the smoothness, but the flavor profile was more bitter than I prefer for a cold brew. I would certainly drink this again, but it would not be my go to option for canned cold brew.
La Colombe’s coffee is widely distributed across the United States. You are likely to see their coffee in your nearest grocery store. You can also purchase this particular coffee on their website, Amazon, and pretty much any other online retailer. La Colombe offers a wide variety of beans, I am partial to the Nizza blend which will eventually make its way on here for a review. Check out their full line of coffee and other products here and give one of Philadelphia's favorite coffee brands a try!
