How’s it going? Hope the coffee is flowing! After a brief canned cold brew break, today we are going back to the French Press with a review of Kicking Horse’s (explicit language alert) Kick Ass Blend Coffee.
This is my second Kicking Horse coffee review (check out my review of their Three Sisters Blend Here). I bought that as part of an Amazon Prime day sale and got a great deal on it. I actually got an even better deal on Kick Ass blend, as it was a free gift with a Thrive order. I’ve spoken a bit about Thrive in my review of their Breakfast Blend (you can read it here). We enjoy a lot of their Thrive branded products, and they are a good price. You can check them out here. As for Kicking Horse Coffee, they’re a brand I really enjoy, at least from the coffee that I have had of theirs. They offer organic and fair trade coffee at a decently reasonable price, though their bags are on the smaller side as they’re 10 oz instead of 12 or 16 oz.
After enjoying the complexity of their Three Sisters Blend I had high expectations of Kick Ass, so let’s find out if it lives up to its name!
When rating coffee I follow the same method of brewing each time. Find out about how I prepare the coffee I rate here. One caveat I need to mention is this was shipped to me ground, so it was finely ground not coarse ground.
Kicking Horse Kick Ass Blend Coffee Review:
Upon opening the bag I was greeted with a smoky and slightly sweet fragrance. I like a smoky dark roast, so this was getting things off to a great start for sure.
As it brewed the smoky notes remained and the sweetness became more noticeable giving a touch of vanilla to the aroma. The grind may have played a part here, but this was a heavy coffee, it had a very full body.
The cup starts with slightly sweet and deep dark sugary molasses notes, there is a slightly smokiness to this that gives it an almost toffee-like taste. The sweetness gets stronger in the middle and takes on a semi-sweet chocolatey flavor. The sweetness carries through into the finish but becomes slightly malty. A touch of earthiness lingers as the final touch.
Overall this was a really interesting blend. It was sweet and smoky with that lingering earthiness. I really enjoyed this, it was a very complex dark roast, but the flavor profile might not appeal to a normal coffee drinker. I would certainly purchase this though.
You can find Kick Ass and the rest of Kicking Horse’s offerings on their website. At a price of $13.99 for 10oz (about $22.38 per pound) it is on the slightly more expensive side, but certainly not too bad. Kick Ass is also available on Amazon where it and the rest of their coffee is available at a slightly cheaper price.
